Happy New Year! Happy New Year! An estimated 40% of Americans make New Year’s resolutions, and only 8% of people achieve their resolutions. I don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions because really every day is a new day to reset and restart with our dreams, visions, and goals. In the good words of my favorite brain hacker Jim Kwik: “80% of success is mindset. It’s an attitude. Get curious. Live with renewed wonder. See through a child’s eyes. Become wildly fascinated, absurdly dazzled and delighted. Defy the odds. Doubt your doubts. Listen. Breathe deep. Dream. Fall in lust with learning, enraptured by exploration. Trace end limits. Discover. Move. Nourish and guard your mind. Become smitten by your smarts, tantalize your thoughts. Question. Set new standards. Prioritize self-care. Trade perfect for progress. Sell your cleverness for bewilderment. Forgive. Create white space. Mind wide open. Remember to remember. Seduce your senses, intoxicate your imagination. Be present. Arouse your awareness, believe your brilliance. Learn to learn. Ask. Create. Play. Get messy. Bounce forward. Laugh aloud. Inspire. Collaborate. Collide. Serve. Allow. Be you. Share. You read all the books, go to all the seminars, listen to all the podcasts… you know ALL of this already. It’s inside you. Love yourself and live it.” So if you did make resolutions–or we could just call them dreams, goals, visions for a beautiful future–how do you make those bad boys stick? We recently brought Handel Group into Urban Wellness Clinic to help us execute on our dreams. Here are some tips we picked up from them: Write down your dream. Make it exciting, make it legendary. Writing it down is key for you to see what it looks like on paper. Don’t worry, you can cross out, re-write, revamp anytime you want. This is not set in stone. In fact, I re-write my dream and vision for the clinic every day on the F train to work. Write down your “Why” behind your dream. Lose sight of your why and you will lose sight of your goals. Write down 2 goals to make that dream happen. Make sure they are specific, measurable, and clear. Write a promise to help turn your goal into a habit/routine. Make it specific and measurable AGAIN! Write a consequence that would be icky enough to make you want to keep your promise to yourself. Tell a friend of your dreams, your goals, your promises, and consequences, in fact tell everyone you meet. Your voice becomes your reality. Even tell us: we love to hear our patient’s dreams. Lastly visualize yourself achieving your goal, living the life you dreamed up daily. Your thoughts become your words, which become your actions. Now go write it down and make the magic happen!
