Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITB Syndrome)

What is iliotibial band syndrome?

Typically impacting runners, Iliotibial Band Syndrome occurs when the ligament spanning the outside of your thigh is strained and stretched too tight to function properly. Typically, you will notice some discomfort and swelling around the knee, with pain shooting up the impacted leg. To determine what type of injury yo have, you can undergo an MRI scan. If the results show that the iliotibial band looks thicker than normal, it is likely experiencing some inflammation.

What are the symptoms of iliotibial band syndrome?

Typically, you will notice a great deal of pain and discomfort in the knee, especially when putting a lot of pressure on the heel when walking or running. You may also notice some swelling, pressure, and tightness as well.

How do we treat iliotibial band syndrome?

We do a series of stretching exercises with you to ensure that your iliotibial band is stretched out, which will help relieve some pressure and pain. We also develop a treatment plan that caters to your specific type of injury and will help you increase your range of motion and strengthen the injured area.
