Active Release Technique is a therapy used to treat muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue that become injured from an acute, cumulative, or pressure injury. This treatment was developed by Dr. Michael Leahy. His technique is based on a system of specific movements and massage methods designed to eliminate pain and increase mobility. What does it feel like? The treatment can feel uncomfortable at first; however, this is a good sign that the primary cause of the injury has been found. Many Active Release NYC patients state that it feels like a stretch you need but you can’t do yourself. How is it effective? This treatment has been very effective with many different types of injuries. However, the latest breakthrough with this therapy has come about in the treatment of scar tissue and carpal tunnel syndrome. Active Release Technique NYC specialists have helped many patients find relief from scar tissue pain in as little as 4-6 sessions. Why does it work? The goal of this treatment is to restore normal mobility and motion between muscle tissue and nerves. This treatment also helps release any entrapped nerves or blood vessels. As scar tissue builds up, it can cause adhesions or fibrosis to build up in soft tissue. This treatment works by eliminating scar tissue build-up from within soft tissue structure. Besides eliminating scar tissue, this treatment reduces the stress placed on joints and nerves. Active Release treatment has become known as a “Gold Standard” treatment for world–class athletes around the world. Is it covered by insurance? Active Release Technique is cover by most insurance. Be sure to contact Urban Welllness Clinic before treatment to figure out your insurance benefits. What it needs to be certified? For this treatment to be certified, the medical provider must be a licensed health care professional such as a chiropractor, medical or osteopathic doctor. ART doctors must take 24 educational credits sponsored by New York Chiropractic College and pass a practical exam before they can be certified as an ART provider. Is it possible to do this on yourself? If you are a certified Active Release chiropractor, you could possibly do this treatment on yourself. However, the type and location of the injury can make it impossible for you to apply the proper pressure or be able to do the appropriate movement techniques. For a more precise and accurate treatment, it would be best to make an appointment with our Active Release chiropractor at Urban Wellness Clinic. Is it painful? According to many Active Release Technique NYC patients, this treatment can sometimes feel aggressive or painful. Mild pain and soreness can be expected within the first 48 hours. This pain is considered to be a good “pain” and often does not return with repeated Active Release Technique sessions. ART doctors state that many patients are able to be pain-free from injuries in as little as 4 to 6 sessions.
